Why did YouTube stop showing the option to turn my own long videos into Shorts, and what should I do instead?

I’d check the video’s remix settings first. Mine disappeared once because sampling was off on the original upload.

When the app button acts up, I just make a vertical export from the original file and upload it as a new Short.

A workflow diagram showing how to troubleshoot a missing YouTube Shorts conversion button and when to switch to manual vertical editing.

Start With The Expected Path

In short, focus on these checks: start with the expected path, check sampling and claims, and use a fallback workflow. Avoid rebuilding the whole content strategy from one trend, tool, or metric; run a small test and compare the audience response before making more videos. The caveats are platform context, production effort, content quality, and whether the next step is measurable. More detailed guidance is below.

For your own uploaded videos, YouTube’s built-in path is usually in the mobile app: open the public long-form video while signed into the same channel, tap Remix, then choose the option to edit it into a Short. YouTube’s help page describes this as a mobile Shorts creation flow, so it is normal for the desktop website or Studio page to feel less useful for this specific action.

If that option vanished everywhere, treat it as a feature eligibility problem first, not proof that your channel is broken. YouTube says the source video must be a public long-form video you uploaded. Private videos, unlisted videos, and videos with third-party copyright claims are not eligible for this particular conversion feature.

Check Sampling And Claims

The most common setting to check is Shorts remixing or sampling. In YouTube Studio, open the video details, expand the deeper settings, and look for the Shorts remixing option. If sampling is disabled, YouTube says the edit-into-a-Short option may not appear, even for your own upload.

Also check the video’s copyright status. A claimed song, clip, background track, or manually claimed segment can make a video unavailable for this workflow. That does not always mean you cannot make a Short at all; it means YouTube may not let you create it through the built-in remix path from that source video.

Use A Fallback Workflow

If the button is still missing after the settings check, export the Short manually. Download or use your original project file, choose one strong moment, crop it to vertical or square, keep it under the current Shorts limit, add captions, and upload it as a fresh Short from YouTube Studio or the YouTube app. YouTube’s current upload rules classify square or vertical videos up to three minutes as Shorts when uploaded under the current Shorts rules.

This is where an external editing workflow can be faster than waiting for a platform button to reappear. You can draft the clips in YumCut, create a vertical version with captions and a clear opening hook, then upload the finished file directly. Manual review still matters: check whether the clip stands alone, whether any music or footage is cleared, and whether the title makes sense without the original long video beside it.

For Shorts over one minute, be especially careful with claimed third-party material. YouTube states that Shorts longer than one minute with active Content ID claims can be blocked globally until the claim is resolved. If your clip relies on music, game footage, broadcast footage, or someone else’s media, make a cleaner version before publishing.

Make The Short Worth Uploading

Do not only shrink the long video. A good Short usually needs its own opening beat, tighter pacing, readable captions, and a reason to keep watching even if the viewer never clicks through to the full video. YouTube’s creator guidance recommends pulling out the most compelling moments, cropping for 9:16, adding captions or overlays, and making the Short enjoyable on its own.

A practical pattern is: first second equals context, next few seconds deliver the payoff or tension, final line points to the full video only if that helps. If the source is a tutorial, extract one actionable step. If it is entertainment, use the cleanest reaction, reveal, mistake, or before-and-after moment. If the missing YouTube button is costing you time, create the fallback Shorts in YumCut as a repeatable batch instead of troubleshooting every video one by one.

Practical next steps

  • Confirm you are signed into the same YouTube channel that uploaded the long-form video.
  • Open the source video in the YouTube mobile app and look for Remix, not only desktop Studio controls.
  • Make sure the source video is public, long-form, and uploaded by your channel.
  • In YouTube Studio, enable Shorts remixing or sampling for that video, then save.
  • Check for Content ID claims or copyright restrictions before trying the built-in conversion again.
  • If the button stays missing, export a vertical or square Short manually and upload it as a new Short.
  • For clips over one minute, avoid claimed third-party material unless you are sure it is cleared.
